40 Ways to Pray – Devotional

Day 36 – Pray using a Daily Devotional

So the first key to pray using a daily devotional is to first set aside that time with you and the Lord each day for Bible reading and prayer – I call that quiet time.  The second is to use some kind of devotional to help you during that quiet time.

I like to use a short daily devotional as part of my quiet time.  Just a verse and short story to set my focus.  I don’t use this for all of my quiet time usually, but some days that may be all I use.

A devotional is helpful because they will cover the scripture in a variety of ways and help me bring attention something that I may not have looked at in a while.  It is almost certain to cover more topics of praise than I could come up with myself.

So go online or to your local bookstore and find a good Bible based devotional to help you find a daily topic of prayer.

My Prayer for Today

Lord I thank you for the devotionals that you have shown to me and allowed me to purchase.  Please use those to guide my mind and deepen my relationship with You.  In the name of Jesus I pray.

40 Ways to Pray – Forgiveness

Day 35 – Pray to Forgive and for Forgiveness

“For if you forgive people their wrongdoing, your heavenly Father will forgive you as well. But if you don’t forgive people, your Father will not forgive your wrongdoing.”  Matthew 6:14-15

To get forgiveness, you have to give forgiveness.

I want you to take a moment to ask the Lord to reveal to you those that you have wronged and not asked for forgiveness.

Go ahead

It may take you a while to get back to reading this post……..

If we are honest there are a lot of people that we have did wrong and not asked for forgiveness – from God or them.

If you will take the time to recall those wrong doings and ask forgiveness I guarantee two things – you will feel better, and your relationship with God will increase.  Wow – that is a win/win!  So why not do it now?

My Prayer for Today

Lord you know all I have done – good and bad.  Help me to recall the people I have wronged to include You and I ask You for forgiveness.  Then those people that I am still able to, help me go to them and ask forgiveness.  And those that I am not able to get to will you show me grace?  In the wonderful name of Jesus I pray.

40 Ways to Pray – Country Leaders

Day 34 – Pray for the Leaders of our Country (USA)

Today’s prayer is not concerned with the political view you may have with those leading our country.  I don’t agree with the way our current leaders are guiding our country.  I have two ways to change them:

  • The power of the ballot box
  • Prayer

I do vote in every election.  Whether I agree with those I have to choose from or not, I still cast my vote for the best person that has agreed to run for office.  I tell you, you may not agree that we have the best persons running for a particular office, but if nobody else wants to go through the scrutiny of public office what do you do?  You vote for the best option of those who agreed to lead in that capacity.

I think we fail to lift our leaders up in prayer.  Whether they understand or ask for our prayers I feel it is our duty to pray for them.  If nothing else, maybe God will change our mind to how things are currently being ran.

My Prayer for Today

God I ask that you bless the leaders of our country.  Those that have agreed to a leadership role will be held to a high standard that others.  Please help to ensure that these people understand that principal and show them truth and wisdom in their decisions.  In the name of Jesus I pray.

40 Ways to Pray – those against you

Day 33 – Pray for those who are against you

Ouch – now this one is tough.

Matthew 5:44 says – But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you

Romans 12:14 – Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse.

Such a tall order from Jesus, but He did it.  It is so hard to pray for somebody who you know is against you.  But that is what He told us to do.

I can think of three ways to pray for those who are against me:

  1. Pray that God will forgive them and show you where you need to forgive them.
  2. Ask God to give you grace as you extend grace to them where differences cannot be settled.
  3. Pray that God’s love will be revealed to them in such as way that their eyes would be opened.

My Prayer for Today

Lord please help me forgive those who go against me in speech and deed.  Help me understand their point of view and give grace.  In the name of Jesus I pray.

40 Ways to Pray – those for You

Day 32 – Pray for those who are for You

I’m talking about your family, friends and neighbors.

I know that as I was growing up my mom and grandmother prayed for me.  I’m sure there were others, but those two I somehow understood that they were petitioning God for me.

In today’s world it is hard to find someone who will pray for you, and if you know someone who does – thank them.  Thank them so much that you in turn pray for them.

What would our country look like today if we took the time to pray for those we know and love on a daily basis.  Not just ask God to watch over them and bless them, but ask Him to reveal things you need to do and say for them.  That’s where the blessings of prayer are realized.

So how do you know who prays for you?  How do you know who is for you – who supports you?  It should be pretty easy to see the power of the Holy Spirit on those who pray for you.  They also have an understanding of where you are and have patience with you no matter where that might be.

My Prayer for Today

God I am so thankful for my family and friends that love me and pray for me.  Help me not to take them for granted and lift them up to you in prayer each day as well.  In the name of Jesus I pray.

40 Ways to Pray – for your Pastor

Day 31 – Pray for your Pastor

I don’t know that I have seen a more difficult job to have than that of a pastor.  I have a job where I work pretty hard, and I have deadlines and commitments.  But at the end of the day I usually leave work at the office till I come back the next day.

Well a pastor doesn’t do that.  He has to hear from God about the message that he needs to deliver either one and up to three times a week.  Then there is the general business of a church that the pastor gets involved with – it shouldn’t be that way but it does happen.  Then there is the ongoing spiritual needs that people have 24 hours a day.  From wrecks, surgeries, health issues, marital problems, domestic squabbles, moral failures and those looking for guidance, a pastor hears way too many issues in a weeks time.

And then he has to put all that behind him and stand before the congregation the next week and share how God loves us.  I tell you it is a tall order to fill.

Now, the next thing we need to realize is who is the greatest target that satan has in our church?  Do you think he goes after the one who throws a $20 in the plate, the husband that shows up because his wife is nagging him or the little old lady that has the gift of complaining?  No, satan already has them – no need to focus his efforts on those kind of people.

No satan wants to start at the top and work his way down to the weakest point to divide the church.  Satan will do all he can to disrupt, distract or derail a pastor.  And he will do it at a time that is most inconvenient to the pastor.

So how does a pastor get through a day and how does he bring a God inspired message each and every week?  Through his payers and the effective prayers of the congregation.

Don’t leave it all up to him to pray for his self and for you – not let’s turn that equation around.  Let’s pray for me and then for him.  And by the authority of Jesus and the power of the Holy Spirit our pastors will be surrounded by grace and our churches will be effective in the battle against satan.

My Prayer for Today

Lord I lift my pastor Sean up in prayer today.  I ask that satan not find a way to enter his heart or mind.  Please protect him from physical, mental and spiritual attacks.  Allow him to clearly hear from You so that we as a church can truly worship You in spirit and truth.  In the all powerful name of Jesus I pray.

40 Ways to Pray -for Sunday worship

Day 30 – Pray for Sunday worship services

If you attend church, do you pray for the Sunday service?  Why not?

Do you expect the worship leader and pastor to deliver the goods week in and week out without the help of your prayers?

Do you consider your prayers to be ineffective or not needed?  Well let me say they are effective, and they are needed.

A church that is not powered by prayers and guidance from the Holy Spirit is a church that is guided by man.  And to be honest that is not really a church – that would be a club or social event.

A church should be powered by prayer.  To be honest that is the secret sauce of a successful church – prayer.  You want your church to be successful – pray for it!

My Prayer for Today

I lift up my church family of Graveston Baptist.  I ask that each of us that call ourselves members will prepare our hearts and minds to encounter Jesus when we gather on Sunday.  I pray for the preacher, the teachers, the music leaders, deacons, security and greeters all to be guided by the finger of God.  I also ask that if anything good comes from our time together that we would be careful to give God the glory!  In the name of Jesus I pray!

40 Ways to Pray – Silence

Day 29 – Pray in Silence

First of all it is difficult to find a place that is truly silent – but I think we all can find that time and place.  For some I know it can be difficult.  Others it may not be a challenge at all.

But find a time and place to just get alone with God.  In silence.

Today’s world is full of noise.  Radio, TV, dogs, cars, planes, birds, kids, parents and clocks all make a noise that can and will distract us.

How many worship services have you been in lately at church and the service had some quiet time?  We usually have to have some kind of music to fill the empty space, but what if there is not any.  Do you get uncomfortable?  Why?

I believe we need to find time to get alone with God in silence for 10 minutes, 30 minutes, an hour or even two.  Our minds are so conditioned to have constant input that it takes a while to adjust and be comfortable with no audible input.

But when we do get that time God is able to speak in volumes to us.  He will speak in that still small voice that we know, because we are His sheep – we know His voice.

When was the last time you sat in silence to listen to God?  Have you ever just sat and listened to God?  If not, you are missing a true blessing in this life.

My Prayer for Today

In the silence of the time I have today please speak to me in a still small voice that I know and will obey.  In the name of Jesus I pray.

40 Ways to Pray – Exercising

Day 28 – Pray while Exercising

I am not the most avid exercise person you will ever meet, but I do try to work out three or four times a week.  We recently joined a fitness center and I love to get in a good workout when time allows.

When I workout I am usually by myself whether in the gym or walking.  So I have a little time to myself and my thoughts.  So I try to turn them to a time of listening to God.

I find that I am more able to just listen while working out, because my mind is already occupied with what I am physically doing.  But it doesn’t take much to let my mind fill the gaps with asking God where do I need to be today?  What do I need to be doing?

If you are a person who likes to exercise, try just listening to God the next time your mind has some down time.

My Prayer for Today

Thank you Jesus for giving me the ability to physically work out and strengthen my body.  Please help me listen to You as I begin my physical exercise, and let my mind be exercised by You!  In the name of Jesus I pray.
